VADr (Vibration Attenuation During Re-engagement) is SigmaStream’s AI-driven solution designed to address one of the most costly and overlooked challenges in drilling—bit damage when re-engaging the formation after a connection or pause. Each impact damages the bit and bottom hole assembly (BHA), leading to expensive replacements and unnecessary non-productive time (NPT). By ensuring a smoother re-engagement, VADr extends bit life, reduces trips, and allows drilling operations to maintain momentum, all of which translate directly into significant cost savings and operational efficiency.
At a high level, VADr works by learning how downhole vibrations respond to surface parameters using only surface sensor data. The system continuously evaluates torque and other surface measurements to anticipate downhole behavior, then generates optimal recommendations for weight on bit (SWOB), rotary speed (RPM), and flow rate. These recommendations guide the driller—or the rig’s control system in closed-loop mode—through the first few minutes after re-engagement, when the risk of damaging vibration is greatest. The result is a consistent, reliable way to mitigate vibrations, reduce dependence on operator experience, and improve both drilling efficiency and equipment longevity.
